What does it mean to be a slave of Allah?: A poem

What does it mean to be a slave of Allah?

It means that whenever we are sad and depressed,
we have hope in our Master the All Wise, for we know He knows what’s best

It’s when we feel helpless and oppressed,
we feel empowered, for we know that our Master the Most Fair, will definitely serve justice on the Day every single deed will be thoroughly accessed

It’s when we feel unloved and unappreciated,
we find contentment, knowing that our Master our Creator the Most Loving and Appreciative, loves us more than our mothers, our friends and all who have ever existed

It’s when we’ve been through a hard day,
we just want to let it all out to our Master the Ever Listening, in solitude and pray

It’s when we feel alone and gloomy,
we find comfort in knowing that our Master the Protective Friend, is always by our side, always present, always listening, and always comforting us with the blanket of His soothing Care and Mercy

It’s when we feel scared and filled with worry,
we seek solace from our Master The Source of Peace and Security, to protect us from our fears and to relieve us from the burdens that we painstakingly carry

It’s when we feel restless and uneasy,
we seek tranquillity from our Master The Calmer of hearts, to calm our thoughts and relieve our anxiety

It’s when anger rages through our souls mercilessly,
we remember our Master the Most Forgiving, thus the blazing fury gets extinguished immediately

It’s when we get hurt badly,
we seek our Master the Curer of hearts, to relieve us of this pain that’s tearing our chests apart savagely

It’s when we are overcome with challenges and difficulty,
we seek our Master the Almighty and trust Him, for we know that He is Ever Capable of bringing us through it all easily

It’s when we feel in bliss and happy,
we know that it is all from Allah The Most Generous, thus we place our foreheads on the ground, gratefully

It’s when we have extra time free, we spend it all in increased worship and devotion towards our Master the Most Kind, enjoying the soothing words of His Majesty

It’s when we feel confused, lost and wondering who’s ‘me’,
we seek guidance and clarity from our Master The Source of Light and Guidance, to save us from drowning in the dark seas of lowly distractions that will soon cease to be

The truth is, servitude in our deen is not something terrible and oppressive, unlike how it is often portrayed. We are not the tortured slaves of a tyrannical master. Rather, we are slaves of our Most Merciful Most Compassionate Creator. Servitude to Allah is based on love and devotion, not hatred and aggression. Whatever that he asks us to do is always in our best interests and whatever He forbids us from doing is always what’s harmful for us. He created us and placed us here, knowing that we can never attain inner peace except through remembering Him. Thus he makes it obligatory upon us because He knows how we weak humans can easily succumb to our desires.

Hence, the identity ‘Slave of Allah’ should be our main identity. It should be a source of pride and resilience, not humiliation and detriment. Hence, let’s all reflect on what this phrase means to us: “What does being a slave of Allah mean to me?”
